Oriental Rug Weaving

If you are wondering what makes your handmade Oriental rug in Manhattan and Brooklyn so special, you have to understand the work that goes into creating one.  Unlike rugs mass produced by a series of machines, the artisanship and skill put into just one rug at a time bring value and authenticity.  It takes many years for a rug weaver to master this trade, but the end result is pretty incredible.

There are many tools at a rug weaver’s disposal with which he must be proficient and skilled.  The first is a hooked knife, also known as a gollab.  While pushing yarn through the warps (see terminology), the weaver will hook the yarn to the face of the rug.  Then he is ready to cut the yarn after he has created a knot with it.

Once he has made several knots across the width, it is time to use a combor beater.  The combor beater consolidates the weave by flattening the row of knots and the warps.  When there is around an inch of pile across the width, the weaver will cut this with scissors.  This helps to determine the final length of the rug when sold.

Next time you look at a genuine Oriental rug, try to imagine all of the weaver’s steps that create what looks like a seamless and perfect item.  To learn more about the rug weaving process and to find out what we can do for your Oriental rug in Brooklyn and Manhattan, give us a call today at 1-888-899-9383.  We look forward to speaking with you.
