Hand Made Vs. Machine Made

Although the term Oriental rug gets thrown around pretty liberally, aficionados will tell you that an area rug needs to be handmade to truly qualify. A machine simply cannot add the precision and detail that a human can. Many carpeting stores and retailers just throw everything together and call them Oriental rugs. Often times, employees do not know or even care if a rug is machine or handmade. They do not have the passion for Oriental rugs that H&S Rug Cleaning and Restoration does.

So how are you supposed to know if you have an official Oriental rug on your hands, if the person selling does not even know? Maybe we can help you a little with some advice for rugs made 100% from wool:

If the Oriental rug has a nap made from polypropylene, polyolefin, any synthetic polymers or blended wool, it is very likely machine made.

Sometimes a rug may be labeled as “Belgium Oriental,” which means it is very likely machine made. In fact, you should be suspicious of any rug made in Belgium, Italy or anywhere else in Western Europe. You know, places nowhere near the orient.

If the Oriental rug has a tag that is obviously manufactured, it is machine made. Some Oriental rugs made with wood pile may come from Turkey, Egypt, Romania, Albania or Bulgaria. All of said countries are known for making quality handmade rugs. However, throughout the past half century, all of these areas have made large quantities of machine made rugs.

The stitching is very different on a handmade rug. The knots are much more distinguished than those found on machine made rugs.

The fringe on a handmade rug will come out of the cloth. On a machine made rug, they are sewn on.
